Any Operating System
Upgrade Carries the
Risk of Catastrophic
Data Loss
BOSTON — November
20, 2009 —
Carbonite.com®, a leader
in online backup,
announces the
availability of
Carbonite 3.7.6,
which supports the
new Microsoft
Windows 7 operating
system (OS).
Carbonite 3.7.6
offers two main
benefits for
consumers upgrading
to Windows 7:
- Protection
of users'
valuable files
in case of hard
drive corruption
during an
upgrade.
- A reliable
file migration
system for
moving files
from Windows
Vista or XP to
Windows 7.
Carbonite 3.7.6
allows customers to
back up their
photos, music,
documents and other
valuable files using
an encrypted system
and secure servers.
Once the Windows 7
installation is
complete, users
simply recover and
restore files using
the Carbonite
Restore Wizard.
Carbonite CEO and
co-founder David
Friend said, "For
consumers who are
going to invest in a
major operating
system upgrade, it
makes a lot of sense
to put in the
minimal incremental
effort needed to
back up all their
files with Carbonite
in case something
goes wrong with the
upgrade."
To prepare data
for an OS upgrade,
Carbonite recommends
a five-step process.
-
Plan ahead.
Before
installing the
new OS,
establish an
appropriate plan
to back up and
secure data.
Include timing,
arrangements,
process
considerations
and
reinstallation
of data.
-
List your
inventory.
Start with the
important
documents you
don't want to
lose. Then list
the photos,
music, financial
records and
other important
files.
-
Allow adequate
time. The
more data you
have to back up,
the more time it
will take. Don't
rush it.
-
Have a backup
plan for the
backup plan.
Before you start
to back up your
files, use a
comprehensive
approach that
includes a
combination of
online backup,
external hard
drives, DVD
disks or other
methods.
-
Test it.
Before you go
ahead with the
OS migration,
test your
backup. Do a
complete trial
including
backing up a
variety of file
types and
retrieving them.
Carbonite 3.7.6
is available to new
and current
Carbonite customers.
Current customers
who want to run
Windows 7 should
reinstall Carbonite
to upgrade to
version 3.7.6.
